Nokomis Learning Center

In conjunction with Jackson National Life, Moore Trosper donated $10,000 to the Nokomis Learning Center to help support youth activities and assist in the preservation of Native American culture. To see a video of the check presentation and learn more about Nokomis, click here.

The Nokomis Learning Center is a non-profit Native American cultural learning center, dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Anishinaabeg culture.  For nearly two decades, Nokomis has been working to educate Michigan communities on Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi) arts, culture, and history.

The center hosts a variety of events geared towards Native American families, such as language classes, craft nights, drum night socials, lectures, children's reading night and a book club.  Nokomis also extends their mission of cultural education through traveling exhibits, which take historical objects such as beadwork, pottery, musical instruments and basketry and teaching tools, such as maps and language learning tools, to local school districts. Nokomis also hosts a variety of rotating exhibits at the Learning Center focused on art, culture, community and history.

Moore Trosper Construction Company has played an active role in the development and implementation of Nokomis programs and initiatives.  Ted Moore, President, has served as a Board Member from 2007 to date.  In 2008, he was elected to the position of Board President, which he currently retains.  Brian Moore, President, also began serving as a Board Member in 2010 and currently serves as Board Secretary.

In addition to serving on the Center's board, Moore Trosper sponsored the Michigan Indian Day Concert, hosted in 2007, as well as sponsoring the Spring and Fall Feast since 2007.  We look forward to continuing to support and advance the Nokomis Learning Center.  Click here to view upcoming events, available programs and information on how you can contribute to the future success of the Center.

Building Strong Sovereign Nations: Tribal Governance Training Conference

The Tribal Governance Training Conference was hosted in February 2009 by MSU Extension, the MSU Native American Institute, Michigan Tribal Leaders and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa Indians to provide educational programming on public policy and procedures for elected officials in local tribal government.

Moore Trosper Construction acted as a sponsor for the two-day event, which included workshops covering Tribal Council roles and responsibilities, legal and public policy, fiscal management, communication, conflict resolution and decision making strategies and future Tribal training needs.  The Tribal Governance Training Conference succeeded in providing a platform for Tribal government officials and community members to discuss mutual concerns and improvement strategies for governance and policy structures.

Native American Business Alliance: 2009 Conference

Building a strong Native business network is essential to the commitment to expand opportunities and ensure the growth of Native American business.  Moore Trosper Construction Company attended the 2009 Conference hosted by NABA to further develop this network and connect with Native American companies throughout the state of Michigan.

Through the networking opportunities provided at the event, we were able to forge partnerships and share mutually beneficial business opportunities with the fellow members of NABA and Native American community.  We look forward to developing these relationships and identifying new opportunities for partnership in the future.  Please contact us at info@mooretrosper.com if you would like to be added to our page of Native American partners and preferred vendors, or if you would like to recommend a company or organization for inclusion.
